Obit Notes for Philip Anthony Rotella
ROTELLA, PHILIP A. - Philip A. Rotella, 79, died on Sunday November 5, 2000 in the comfort of his home. He was in the company of his loving wife of 56 years, Eunice Jane (Nee lent) daughter Betty Jane, and sons Thomas Charles and Joseph Philip. Philip was the son of Saverio ("Pop") and Raffaela (nee Critelli) Rotella, immigrants from Gimigliano, Italy, and was raised in Tomkins Cove, NY. Philip remained in the area and raised his family at 12 Griffen St, Stony Point, NY. In 1942 , Philip proudly served his country in the European African Middle Eastern Campaign in World War II, as a Sergeant in the 2002nd Army Air Force base Unit of the U.S. Army. The VFW Charles R. Lewis Post # 8997 recently honored Philip with a 50 year service award. Like his father, Philip labored at the Tomkins Cove quarry while working for the NY Trap Rock Corporation (now a division of Martin Marietta). He retired in 1975 after 29 years of service and remained a member of the CSEA/ AFSCME Local 918. In 1987 after 10 years of service, Philip retired from the maintenance shop of Letchworth Village, Thiells, NY. Philip was an active member of the Stony Point Senior Citizens Club and was known for telling his jokes while on trips. His travels took him to Alaska, Italy, and Hawaii. Philip always enjoyed the beauty of nature. His work as a master carpenter is known throughout the county. For years to come, many will enjoy the houses, decks, furniture and toys he designed and built. One such house appears in the November 1965 Special Anniversary Edition of Interiors magazine. Often mistaken as a political leader in the community, he truly was the leader of his family. He sat at the head of the table and always enjoyed his family's Sunday spaghetti dinners. He was a devoted husband and raised a loving family. His sister Anna Manglass; stepsister Maria Quattrochi; wife Eunice, three children Betty, Thomas and Joe; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren survive him. Friends may call Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Edward C. Finn Funeral Home, Stony Point, Philip`s Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday at 10 AM at Immaculate Conception Church, Stony Point. Burial will follow in Mount Rest Cemetery, Stony Point. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to United Hospice of Rockland, 11 Stokum Lane, New City, NY 10956. 21
